Green Heating and Cooling Solutions Have Evolved

2. Geothermal Systems

In spite of the name, geothermal systems don’t actually tap into the heat inside the Earth.

Instead, they use heat pumps to make efficient use of the constant temperatureinside geothermal wellsbeneath the ground.

A heat pump contains fluid that, depending on the season, is either water or a refrigerant. In the winter, the water absorbs the Earth’s heat and then brings it inside to warm the air. In the summer, that heat exchange works in reverse with a refrigerant that cools the air.

3. Absorption Systems

Absorption heating and cooling systems are also driven by heat pumps. But these pumps are driven by a natural gas burner rather than electricity.

Another difference is that the absorption heat pumps use a water-ammonia solution rather than a refrigerant.

Beyond those two differences, absorption and geothermal heat pumps work in much the same way to heat and cool spaces.

4. Wind Power

Wind power is sometimes used for powering commercial buildings.

However, apint-sized wind turbinewas designed in the last ten years that could one day be used for residential purposes.

With this design, the turbine rotates magnets that spin close to a copper plate. The magnetic resistance of the spinning magnets warms that plate. Water is heated as it’s pumped through a coil of copper tubing that’s mounted on the back of the plate.

This could provide a home with hot water, as well as the possibility of it being pumped through the house to be used as heat.

5. “Ice” Cooling Systems

As the name implies, this one is only for cooling.

This method cools a home with an air conditioning unit that makes use of ice. The system freezes water by circulating refrigerant through a system of copper coils, which turns the surrounding water to ice. The unit then stores that ice.

As the outdoor temperature rises, the ice compressor cools the hot refrigerant. So rather than kicking on, your AC stands down – cutting your energy use significantly.
